Mesothelioma is very hard to diagnose even when the patient is showing symptoms. That's because a lot of other conditions look just like it, such as adenocarcinoma of the lung. But in most places, once all signs point to mesothelioma, you usually end up with an asbestos lawsuit on your hands.

That doesn't really happen here. In fact, we don't even really have many asbestos lawyers per se. Mesothelioma is universally known to be caused by that silicate mineral with its beautiful but deadly fibrous crystals. And yet, there was little asbestos to be found here.

Because we didn't have a convenient scapegoat to turn to, lawsuits got very complicated. Mesothelioma law firms sprung up all over the place, and everyone started suing everyone else, for reasons no one could really be sure of.

Neither the federal nor state nor local government had passed any laws concerning asbestos compensation or anything like that, so all kinds of ridiculous lawsuits were possible and almost encouraged here. Where did little Johnny's mesothelioma come from? It must have come from milk, so let's sue the milk man. But the milk man got his milk from sick cows, so let's sue the farmer. But the farmer is subsidized by the New York Mafia, so let's sue them. And so on, and so on.

It got to the point where half the New York mesothelioma attorneys had migrated to this small town upstate, hoping to get their cut of the easy money. Even kids who hadn't gotten close to law school age were begging their parents to move here. And when the parents saw that they too could become mesothelioma lawyers and take part in this great gold rush, few of them were able to resist.
