BOOM! The asteroid struck with a force that rattled the Earth all the way to its core. Creatures all over the planet could feel the impact tremor, but most of them had no idea what fate awaited them. Anything in the vicinity of the crater was instantly vaporized, and massive earthquakes, landslides, and tidal waves emanated from that point, spreading death and destruction as far as the eye could see.

Prana had failed to stop the collision entirely, but he had stopped the experiment from ending, at least for now. Still, life on Earth was in for some serious changes.

In his mind's eye, he could clearly see what would happen. The trillions of pounds of dirt that had been thrown into the atmosphere would spread out into a dark layer of dust, blocking out the sun and strangling the planet. There would be mass extinctions as the plants lost their ability to carry out photosynthesis of sunlight, the herbivores found plant food to be scarce, and the carnivores ran out of animals to feast on.

Only the most adaptable creatures would survive, but at least there would be a population from which to rebuild the Earth after this time of healing had passed. In time, life would rebound and surpass its previous peak. New species never before conceived of would thrive in this new world after the dust had settled. And one of them would give rise to the perfectly imperfect creatures that we needed to let our experiment continue.

But Prana could see beyond this in his mind's eye, and he shuddered to think of what was coming. If the events now in motion unfolded as he saw them, the cloud of dust would be the least of Earth's problems.
