While anyone who practiced mesothelioma law in this town did well, I had done very well even by our standards. Out of all the lawyers we had in this town, I was one of only a handful who had actually won compensation that included the death penalty for the defendants. When they talk about killer lawyers, in my case it's quite literal.

I owe everything to staying grounded in the facts. That's why I had such a hard time taking Tuck seriously right now.

"Tuck, look," I began. "I know I often get so caught up in the law that I forget how to be a real person. But I'm not some one-dimensional stock character who can't do anything outside his job description. I know how to be a good husband, fire a wide array of weapons with deadly accuracy, and mix a perfect Manhattan. I just don't believe that people who died thousands of years ago were able to predict the exact date of the Earth's demise. I believe in logic."

"Well Jack," Tuck responded, "I believe in logic too. But more than that, I believe in doubt, uncertainty, curiosity, and keeping an open mind. That's where the real magic happens." He paused for a second, then said, "Besides, chicks don't dig logic."

I let out a small laugh and said, "Well, Milli does. I guess that's because she's the same way. She doesn't let her emotions control her like those idiots you see on American Idol, or whatever show appeals to the masses these days. She's all about the cold hard truth, and would never go for a guy with a wild side."
