"Yeah, I'll try to take it easy," I said. "I might be able to, now that my big cases are over. Listen, Morty, my neighbor was asking me a question about drug and alcohol policy in the workplace, and I'm a little weak in that area. Do you know much about it?"

"Some," he answered. "What's the situation?"

"Well, he found out that a coworker was under the influence of alcohol at work. It was after hours, and this guy's been doing great work, but he just slipped up. How bad would that be?"

Morty thought about it for a second. "Hmmm. If you're going by the book, it's pretty bad. But a lot of the time, they don't make a big deal out of these things. A lot depends on who he works for."

A perfect lead-in! "Well, say it happened here. How would you react to someone in the firm being under the influence of alcohol at work? Someone who was otherwise doing a great job?"

Morty leaned towards me and lowered his voice. "Frankly, Jack, as long as someone's meeting my expectations, it's OK with me if they need to do something like that to take the edge off. I'm willing to look the other way."

Well that was good news! I still had to make sure I handled everything the right way, but it looked like Frank was going to keep his job.

"Thanks, that helps," I said. "I'll let them know it all depends on the employer. And I'll suggest that regardless of their employer's stance, they should never let it happen again. Anyway, thanks, and now I've got to get back to work."

"So do I," Morty echoed. "I was just wandering the world of the living in search of fresh blood, by which I mean any insomniacs who happened to be here tonight. I just wanted to see who else was here. I decided to spend the night in the office, to get off to an early start tomorrow."

He did that from time to time. Mesothelioma law really was his life.

"Alright, Morty," I said. "I hope we both manage to get some sleep tonight. By the way, did you see anyone else here?"

"Not a soul," he answered. "Good night, Jack."

"Good night."

So Frank lives to die another day. Only one question remained. Where the hell was he?
