Today, he is the senior partner of the firm, and the last surviving co-founder. People often don't realize this because his name isn't part of the firm's name. But that was just because his name bore a coincidental but unfortunate likeness to the name of someone he didn't want the firm to be associated with. Dewey, Cheatem & Howe was enough of a double entendre as it was. It would have been a disaster to name the firm Dewey, Cheatem, Howe & Hitler.
He decided to tack "the Terrible" onto his name a few years ago. It was just a joke, reflecting the popular opinion of him when he starting dumping tons of work in our laps. But it stuck, and he actually liked it enough to keep it.
To me though, he's just Morty. I'm really glad to work for him, and he's a good friend too. He's helped me out of some really tight spots in the past. Come to think of it, maybe he could help me out with Frank's situation.
He was surprised to see me. "Jack?" he asked. "What are you doing here at this hour?"
I had to improvise fast. "Oh, I was just dealing with yet another bout of insomnia. I think I might need to get on some medication for that. Anyway, since I couldn't get to sleep, I figured I might as well get some work done."
The corners of Morty's mouth turned down. "I hope you're OK, Jack. You've really been on fire lately, and I greatly appreciate the effort. It was such a privilege to watch your closing statement in the Fleming trial. 'You're out of order! You're out of order! The whole trial is out of order!' I don't know how you came up with that, but it was beautiful. Anyway, you've been doing an outstanding job, but I can't have one of my star players burning out."
