"Now that's strange," I noted. "Janice is still new, and she isn't at the point where we're letting her do unsupervised work yet. I don't know why Ivana would pick her for these cases, since she'd have to get someone else to assist anyway."

"Yeah," Frank agreed, "that's what Janice said. She said she didn't know why Ivana would suddenly need her out of the blue, especially for this kind of work, which she doesn't have much experience in. She found it strange at first, then stranger after I told her it happened to me too."

"I can understand that," I said. "I find it strange myself. But I don't think it's anything to be concerned about."

"So I'm not being fired then?" Frank asked.

"Fired?" I responded in shock. "Heavens, no. I couldn't imagine the firm without you."

"Good," Frank let out in a sigh of relief. "I was really worried about that. I know I haven't been doing quite as good a job as you'd like me to, and I thought that you were unloading me onto Ivana. When it turned out that she didn't want me, I thought I was a goner."

"Oh god, Frank, no," I replied. "That's not the case at all. I had no idea that Ivana was even putting you to work on some cases. I don't know what that's all about, but as far as I'm concerned, you're shaping up to be a fine legal professional."

"Thanks, Jack," Frank said. "I'm glad I get to stay, and I'm going to really try to do a better job for you."
