"Frank, please listen to me," I begged. "Just tell me why you wanted to talk. What things have you been noticing at work?"

"What?" he asked. "Oh yeah, I forgot about that. A few days ago, Ivana asked me to help out with a couple of new cases."

"Ivana asked you?"

"Yeah," Frank confirmed. "Didn't you know? She asked me...let's see, she asked me on Monday afternoon, right after that big meeting."

This surprised me. Ivana Suyurass was one of the partners at Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. A fierce woman with piercing blue eyes and fiery red hair, she had a reputation for trying cases with an iron fist. Sometimes the other partners would borrow Frank when they were understaffed, but I always knew about it. Why hadn't Ivana said anything?

"I didn't know," I said, "but go on."

Frank continued. "Yeah, so she gave me these cases, and I looked them over. They seemed like run-of-the-mill asbestos lawsuits, nothing especially difficult. I just needed to do some client interviews, track down some witnesses, pull some stats, and draft some documents. The usual stuff."

"OK, and I'm guessing they turned out not to be so run-of-the-mill?"

"That's the thing," Frank replied. "I never found out. A few hours ago, Ivana took the cases back from me. She said I could stop working on them, she thanked me for what I had done so far, and she took the files back."

That sounded odd. "When was this? Where was I when she took the files back?"
