The status I was most interested in now was "online." These people were logged in and had been active recently. I could send them an IM, an instant message, to have a quick conversation. It was a means of communication that made the world just a little bit smaller.

The people who were online had green circles by their names, and the small number of them jumped out from a sea of more subtle colors. I moved my eyes down the screen, seeing who else had insomnia.

Let's see...Bob was online. I might have known, with the big case he was up against. They say it's unwinnable, but I've seen him work miracles before. Moving on down...Karen was online. Rumor had it that she was gunning for partner. If so, she certainly couldn't afford to slow down now. Continuing down the list...Frank was online. Wow, that's a surprise.

Frank Breadstick was my paralegal. A really great kid with lots of potential. We had just snapped him up fresh out of Mesothelioma Lawyers University, with a bachelor's degree (summa cum laude) in mesothelioma paralegal studies.

He was a somewhat controversial hire, but I think he was a good catch. His youth really shows, often embarrassingly so, but he's working on that. The kid's got a solid background, oodles of talent, and most importantly, you can always count on him to get the job done.

But what was he doing online at this hour?

Just then, as if he could read my thoughts, his IM came through.

Frank Breadstick [12:04 AM]:
wazzaap!
